Where to find help

How can dialing 211 help me?

2-1-1 is a free community service administered by the United Way. You can call 2-1-1 to get information, or to seek help in a crisis. They are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

What happens when I call 211?

You will be asked some questions about what you need, your situations and where you are. They will then refer you to places around you that help in whatever you are looking for.

Do they have multilingual services?

If you don't speak English, you can still call 211. They do have multilingual services. If you speak Spanish, they can help you in Spanish.

Will I get help for certain by calling 211?

By calling 211, their trained specialist will consult you on your situation, advise you and give you a list of things you can do and people and organizations you can contact. Depending on your situation and why you need help, unfortunately, you may or may not get the help you want. Although United Way aims to help everyone needing help, not everyone will be able to get help the way they want to be helped. For example, if you need financial help because you are about to lose your home, you can call for help but it doesn't mean they will just hand you the money to save your home. United Way, charities and help organizations work in their own ways to help you.

What kind of help can United Way give me?

There are all kinds of things they can help you with. For examples:

  • If you need food assistance, they can refer you to a list of food pantries in your area.
  • They can help you with shelters if you are homeless or suffer from domestic violence and need shelter.
  • They can refer you to organizations that can help you with rent and mortgage payments as well as utility assistance.
  • They can help with Medicaid, Medicare and other healthcare problems.
  • They can refer you to a number of support groups that specialize in problems you have.
  • They can direct you to the right job, training and employment programs.
  • They help seniors and those with disabilities.
  • They help children, youth and families.

These are examples of what they can help with. The list of things they can help with is very long so it is best to call them with your specific problems and they will tell you what they can offer.

I can't pay my mortgage / rent, can United Way help me?

Mortgage and rent assistance is tricky. United Way has a list of organizations that can help but whether they are able to at the time of your call is a different issue altogether. Most people in the Kansas City area found that whenever they call them, they are told that they are out of funds. It is a common problem so don't be discouraged. There are many people calling them for help with mortgage, rent and utilities assistance so they are bound to be out of funds. But they won't be out of funds for a long time so it is best to keep calling them.
